What Are the Usual Terms of Board HOA and Condo Members

An owner expresses his/her question like this:

“We have had our HOA president for more than 2 years, and having problems with the hoa president, and property management co.  what is the standard term for hoa president?”

My answer is that the answer is in the Bylaws of the Association. Director qualifications and terms should be specified. The most common terms are anywhere between 1 and 4 years.

If the reader is waiting for a new board because of upcoming elections, he or she may be surprised. In many associations the incumbents run again and again for lack of any other willing volunteers, and I would say only a small percentage of Bylaws contain any term limits.

Our HOA Director has been on our board for 28 years. If the president of the United States have a term limit so should HOA Board of Directors.

I would like to agree but there has never been an election year for President where there were no candidates, and if board presidents got paid according to time put in, there would likely be more challenge to the incumbents.

Ask your board in how many elections in the past there have been more candidates than open volunteer board positions. That might provide some insight as to why someone has been in office for so long.
